Islam is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a 7th century religious and political figure of the Arab world. The word ‘Islam’ means ‘submission,’ or the total surrender of oneself to the Islamic conception of God. A follower of Islam is called a Muslim, ‘one who submits to God.’ The total number of Muslims is estimated to be between 1 and 1.8 billion. That makes it the second-largest religion in the world. The Quran is the basic religious book of Muslims and they believe that God revealed it to Muhammad, God’s final prophet, through angel Gabriel. They consider Muhammad as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets.
